Chapter 1735 - 1673: Friends
Zhou Xiuer stayed in the guest courtyard, closing the door and not going out, only doing needlework inside the house, rarely seeing people. After hearing from the maid below, Wufu said nothing, only instructing the others not to neglect Zhou Xueli.
After learning about Madam Zhou’s background from Zhou Xueli, Wufu treated Zhou Xueli with more respect. Firstly, because Zhou Xueli knows when to advance and retreat, and he has never done anything cruel or bad to them.
Secondly, perhaps it was because of the deceased Madam Zhou. Wufu could not quite explain why, but she was very pleased with Zhou Xueli’s sense of propriety and decency.
Due to the mourning period, Xiao Changsheng’s full moon celebration was not held. However, Wufu’s close friends like Guan Chuying and Changping agreed to visit together.
"We know you’re in deep mourning, and certainly wouldn’t hold a grand full moon celebration for your little brother. We also timed our visit just right; even without celebrating with wine, we can still see the little one." Guan Chuying said generously.
"Yes, we came with gifts." Changping added.
Both were dressed simply, wearing only plain silver ornaments or pearls on their heads, respecting the host family’s mourning period.
Wufu smiled and said, "It’s thoughtful of you already, no need to bring any gifts." She said, nodding to Purple Jade.
"We can still be called little aunts, of course we had to bring gifts." Changping said proudly.
Wufu chuckled.
"Are you well?" Guan Chuying looked at Wufu with concern and said, "Your complexion is still not good, but better than last time."
"Yes, recovering slowly during deep mourning, especially in the first month when it’s not good to eat meat, recovery is slow but my health is not impaired." Wufu replied, "After some time, I will be able to eat a bit."
The poor complexion was mainly because of the excessive blood loss when saving Ah Jiu earlier, followed by a non-stop journey that exhausted her, then the mourning period restricting meat, naturally slowing recovery.
Guan Chuying nodded, "Mourning in mind, but don’t be too harsh, not eating anything. Otherwise, your mother in heaven won’t be at ease; after forty-nine days, eating some eggs and fish is appropriate."
"I understand, truly thoughtful." Wufu said gratefully.
Purple Jade brought the wet nurse along with Xiao Changsheng.
It was the first time Guan Chuying and Changping saw him. Seeing him lying quietly in the basket, they both leaned in closer.
The little one was awake, with his small hand pressed against his lips, small mouth slightly open, eyes wandering around.
"Born very handsome." Changping admired, handing her gift to the wet nurse, which was a long-life lock and Eight Treasures necklace.
While Guan Chuying’s gift was a fine piece of mutton fat white jade, carved with scriptures, said to be consecrated and washed before Buddha.
"Not much like you, nor like your mother."
Wufu glanced at the little one and said, "He resembles my mother’s own brother, able to procreate."
Guan Chuying and Changping exchanged a glance, and after Changsheng went down, they tried probing, "Your mother’s own brother?"
Wufu smiled slightly and said, "It turns out my mother was not born by the current Madam of the Zhou family, her biological mother was someone else, just happened to be found. Unfortunately, she was not blessed, just learned of it and then passed away."
Guan Chuying held her hand and said, "Don’t think too much, just being able to recognize is good enough. With one more person to care for you and the little one, surely your mother can be at ease."
Wufu nodded, not speaking further on the topic, looked at the two, and smiled: "Speaking of, I haven’t congratulated you, I heard you’re both engaged?"
With these words, Guan Chuying and Changping both blushed.
