Chapter 361 - 155: Death Night 3
Chapter 361 - 155: Death Night 3
Then, Shen Bai figured out the reason.
’Deceitful Beasts have all sorts of abilities. If I encounter a particularly versatile one that I can’t kill right away, maybe I can use this Divine Power to trap it, then figure out a way to finish it off later.’
Of course, this was just a theory. But whether it was a sound one or not, it was, at the very least, another Divine Power.
After this transformation, the golden Qi in his body had spread to fill two-fifths of his first meridian.
Shen Bai estimated that if he cultivated a few more Divine Powers, he’d be able to break through to the second meridian.
However, now was clearly not the time to be cultivating.
Yesterday was the first round, and today was the second.
No matter how outstandingly Shen Bai had performed in the first round, he had to at least go through the motions for the second. Otherwise, others would see him as a nonconformist.
Besides, Shen Bai wanted to participate in the second round himself.
The reason was simple, and it all came down to that guy, Wang Tianxing.
Given the trouble Wang Tianxing had caused during the internal exam, Shen Bai needed to observe his surroundings carefully. That way, if a crisis occurred, he could follow the clues to track down Wang Tianxing and eliminate this grave threat for good.
Just as he was thinking this, a knock came from the door.
Shen Bai called out, "Who is it?"
After Shen Bai asked, an unfamiliar voice came from outside the door.
"Lord Shen. Lord Feng sent me to inform you that the second round is about to begin. We must depart at once."
Shen Bai frowned slightly and walked to the door. When he opened it, he saw an Observatory member dressed in red silk waiting outside with his head bowed.
When he sensed Shen Bai open the door, a flicker of surprise appeared on the Observatory member’s face. He looked at Shen Bai with a trace of awe.
"Understood. Please tell Lord Feng I’m departing at once," Shen Bai said.
"Yes," the Observatory member replied respectfully.
Without another word to Shen Bai, he turned and walked away from the door.
Ever since last night, everyone, from Feng Zheng’s men to the other participants in the internal exam, held a certain awe for Shen Bai.
This awe stemmed from Shen Bai’s power and his performance during the first round.
After all, that terrifying Deceitful Beast had appeared twice, and both times Shen Bai had killed it single-handedly. It wasn’t just his Swordsmanship; his other abilities, in everyone’s eyes, were simply divine.
Shen Bai watched the Observatory member leave, then gathered his things. He beckoned to Amber, who was on the table. "Time to go, Amber. Stop playing with your tail."
Amber was lying on its side on the table, intently playing with its own tail.
Ordinarily, when Shen Bai was practicing his Liver Divine Power, it liked to pass the time this way.
As a proper Deceitful Beast, Amber always knew to play by itself when it wasn’t time to be cute.
At Shen Bai’s call, Amber let out a meow, leaped into his arms, and nuzzled affectionately against his chest.
Shen Bai stroked Amber’s chin, then, holding the creature, shut the door behind him and headed for the location of the second round.
...
Just like the first round, the second was also held in the nine-story tower.
By the time Shen Bai arrived, the area was already crowded with the participants of the internal exam.
Feng Zheng, the Third Prince, and the others stood on high, whispering among themselves.
Their conversation was mostly about the second round of the exam, but Shen Bai’s name frequently drifted out from their discussion.
It couldn’t be helped. Shen Bai’s performance the previous night had simply been too dazzling—like the sun itself, so bright one could barely look.
As they continued to chat, the topic easily went off on a tangent.
Shen Bai’s arrival was like a spotlight suddenly landing on him, instantly drawing everyone’s attention.
No one needed to call out his name. As Shen Bai drew near, the surrounding participants all clasped their fists in greeting.
They had been rivals before—and a temporary rival was still a rival—but now, not a single one of them treated Shen Bai as an opponent.
After all, when no one could even hope to match him, Shen Bai had long since ceased to be a rival.
The participants who had made it to the second round could only hope they wouldn’t run into Shen Bai. If they did, they might as well just surrender on the spot.
Although Lv Bei and his two companions hadn’t advanced to the second round, they still lingered at the exam site, watching from a distance.
They had learned a great deal from yesterday’s battle.
Sometimes, a person could absorb a great deal of experience just by watching from a distance.
The reason they hadn’t left immediately was that they wanted to see how Shen Bai would perform in the second round.
As for Shen Bai, he seemed perfectly composed under the weight of everyone’s stares.
But he wasn’t arrogant or domineering; he returned the greetings of every participant who came to say hello.
When he came to a stop beside Ouyang Sword, Ouyang Sword looked at him with admiring eyes.
"Brother Shen, I’ve realized that your kind of effortless swagger is the real deal. When it comes to the art of looking cool, I admit I’m not on your level."
Ouyang Sword’s entire lineage had inherited that personality from Elder Mu. Or to be more precise, it came from Elder Mu’s own master—the one who was a Landlord in a Capital City—who had always possessed that same sort of air.
To put it nicely, you’d call it the aura of an ultimate show-off.
But Ouyang Sword felt his own "ultimate show-off" aura was always superficial.
He had to make a conscious effort to project it in his every move.
Shen Bai’s aura, on the other hand, radiated from him effortlessly.
Looking at how everyone around Shen Bai was acting, coupled with Shen Bai’s own calm demeanor, Ouyang Sword felt it was something he could spend a lifetime studying and still never learn.
