Chapter 259: First Step To A New Life
Chapter 259: First Step To A New Life
"You are quitting?!"
Clara blurted out in disbelief as she pushed her chair back slightly and stared at Damian like she had misheard him.
Nothing about this made sense.
Everything had finally started going well, he had become more active in the office and spent more time around people.
After the Delaney trial his reputation had exploded overnight. This was the moment people built careers from. This was the moment people stopped chasing opportunities because opportunities started chasing them.
With another few years, no, at his current pace, maybe even months, Damian could become senior partner.
The youngest and the first to do so at his age. The kind of achievement people talked about decades later.
So why would he walk away now?
Then her eyes drifted toward Loth standing quietly beside the door.
"And why is she here?" Clara’s tone softened unintentionally.
She had seen this woman several times acting as Damians personal assistant and it always unsettled her.
Loth was the definition of ’smoking hot’. While she could not compete with Damians wives, Loth was entirely different. She feared that the small love Damian had for her would be stolen by the hot driver who always wore tight clothes to show off her curves and bumps
[Your side chick is jealous of your driver. Great.]
’Crazy right?’ Damian rolled his eyes inwardly
[Imagine when she finds out Loth is living with you]
’Its gonna be a bloody crash out.’
Clara never complained because she felt she had no right. But if she was being honest, she found Loth intimidating.
Not because she suspected anything, but because this woman looked unreal. She was exactly the kind of women people wrote stories about.
Seeing someone that hot always beside her man keeps her up at night.
Damian looked at Clara quietly as his eyes lingered longer than usual. He could tell she was scared, not of Loth but of being left behind.
He understood that feeling and maybe that’s why she has a special place in his cold heart. He had once watched people move forward while he remained stuck.
He knew exactly what it felt like.
"Because I have bigger dreams and goals." He finally answered.
"This place is too small for me." He said as his eyes drifted around the office.
Clara froze and her heart skipped painfully. Those words sounded harmless but to her they sounded like goodbye.
She always felt this ever since Damian changed. There had always been this strange feeling in the back of her mind like she was holding onto wind that one day would simply disappear.
There was too much Mysteries and things she couldn’t explain about Damian
"So you are leaving us..." Her fingers tightened slowly as her voice dropped.
Damian looked at her and shook his head.
"I left them, not you. I came to get you."His eyes softened.
Clara’s eyes widened instantly and heat rushed to her face. The heaviness disappeared so suddenly she almost laughed.
But before she could speak Damian stepped closer and gently pressed his finger against her lips.
"It’s not that simple, so don’t give me an answer now." He shook his head. "I’ll come pick you up after work."
Saying that Damian slowly stood up and adjusted his coat. Clara stared at him we her heartbeat sped up.
"And I’ll take you somewhere you can finally get answers to the questions you’re dying to ask." Damian said with a smile.
Clara blinked as something inside her tightened. She couldn’t explain why but Damians words did not make her feel better. Instead, she suddenly felt like her life had reached a crossroads.
Whatever happens tonight determines if her and Damian remain together.
’Finally, we are here.’ she sighed inwardly.
Damian had always felt like wind. You couldn’t hold wind. You either followed or got left behind. At least he was reaching out.
At least he was letting her choose.
Clara lowered her eyes briefly and then looked back up.
"So... 5 PM today?" She swallowed and her voice carried a faint unease.
Damian smiled slightly.
"Of course." he gently patted her head. "Have I ever lied to you?"
Clara stared at him for a moment and then slowly smiled.
"Never." She shook her head.
Damian nodded proudly and snapped his fingers. Loth quietly stepped forward without speaking and began packing.
Clara watched quietly and she realized he wasn’t thinking about it anymore. His decision had already been made.
She suddenly felt strangely emotional. She spent so much time imagining what success for Damian would look like but she never imagined she wouldn’t be able to follow where it led.
Damian finished collecting his things and said his goodbyes before leaving.
Outside questions exploded, from associates, partners and even employees. More people tried stopping him and woke even tried congratulating him.
Everyone tried but nobody got answers. By the time he stepped outside, news had already begun spreading.
Damian Hill resigns.
Hero of the Riverfront Trial exits Blacksheep.
People online exploded instantly with speculations. Some attributed it to partnership disputes and others claimed it was scandals
Damian ignored everything as he entered the supercar. Loth quietly started driving while Damian leaned back, phone in hand.
He thumb scrolled endlessly, glancing through articles, videos and pictures and laughed at people who analyzed and criticized his with so little information.
His eyes slowly drifted away from the screen.
"From a nobody to this." His voice became quieted
If he had truly died that night when he got these powers, the world would not have noticed a thing. He doubted he would even make the news but somehow everyone thinks they have the right to an opinion on his life.
"Motherfuckers saying I didn’t show loyalty to the firm?" Damians eyes twitched at one of the comments, it was truly insane people could be this silly online.
[You can just switch off your phone if you can’t deal with it. You wanted fame, you got it.] Rin scolded and Damian rolled his eyes.
He turned his phone off, tossed it to the back of the car and leaned into his seat. Now Blacksheep firm is out of the way, his life can truly begin
