Chapter 181: Deranged
Chapter 181: Deranged
As I walked to the dome the next day, I couldn’t help but think about what had happened at Instructor Summers’s office the day before..
Be her student? She wish. I saw no pros in her offer, not the slightest one. The only things I could see were cons. My free time would undoubtedly decrease, and worse, I’d get stuck in a cringy situation where instructor Summers and Alistair would openly and ’unknowingly’ flirt.
"Whatever." I sighed. I had no intentions of having a master, and I had already made it clear to instructor Summers.
As I walked through the corridor heading towards the 1- Alpha, I began experiencing something strange.
’Why do I feel as if everyone is peeking at me?’ I thought as I walked towards my classroom.
It wasn’t the usual peeking too, I had long grown accustomed to that. This gazes were on another level. Each time I walked past a student, they looked back at me staring me up from head to toe.
Wonder what I did to receive such a reaction? The students were looking at me like I was some sort of animal that escaped from the zoo. As far as I could tell, I didn’t do anything worth the attention.
-"It’s him, he is here."
-"Is it really true he rejected Instructor Summers’s offer to be her student?"
-"How I wish it were me."
-"I kind of get his point though, he is a prince."
-"Yeah, he probably looks down on her."
-"Shh, watch yourself, he can probably hear you."
Ahhh, I see now, so that’s what it is. Foolish humans, for a moment I thought had done something without my knowledge, but turns out it was this.
But first, which son of a bitch spread this information? I didn’t even have to think that much to come up with an answer.
It was golden boy, wasn’t it. It was that obvious, he was the only one in the room apart from myself and instructor Summers. So if I didn’t do it, then it was him.
Of course it might have been instructor Summers herself, but she wouldn’t be that petty... probably.
I soon reached the classroom, and was met with Dion’s enthusiastic waving, Sia’s irritating smile, and Rose’s deadpan look.
Under everyone’s gazes, I shook my head with a wry smile and made my way up to the stairs and took my seat next to the two idiots.
"Proud of you bro." Dion threw both his thumbs up.
I shove his hand down.
"Proud? For what?" I asked silently.
"For your restraint." He said his smile now reaching his eyes. "My degree of resistance is not quite yet at your level." He added with a wistful smile.
"..." Okay I think I should start questioning my sanity if this is my supposed best friend.
"I can’t resist refusing a stunning woman like instructor Summers asking me to be her student. I’d be smitten in a heartbeat."
Rather than questioning my own sanity, I think it’s high time I change friends. That boy sitting in front might be a right fit.
"You boy, are sick, you know that?" I said even though deep down, I knew he was probably right. Don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but Instructor Summers was incredibly stunning. If I was any other person, I’d have eagerly agreed to be her student too.
But her charms had no effect on me, for I am mighty. Wait... Where have I heard something like this? Forget it.
We continued to banter until Edmond arrived. As he appeared everyone could notice that his mood was off for some reason. But I knew exactly why, after all, it was about time.
Crossing his arms, Edmond looked at everyone and sighed. "I have an important announcement. As you know in a few months, at most 2 to 3, you will be having your final exams for the first year. So before that, the higher-ups all concluded that you all seriously need to broaden your horizons."
"So two weeks from now, the institute is going to send you all on a mission. Due to many recent events, the tiered Houses and Aetherial association are quite busy, so we thought as the citizens of the human domain we should extend a helping hand to them." Instructor Black’s voice was followed by shouting and chatting among the students who couldn’t understand what was going on.
"Quiet." Edmond’s yell which had been further amplified by his aether shut up everyone’s mouth. I felt as if my eardrums would burst from the sound.
"Just stay quiet and listen. All of you are going to the western part of the Remea continent. And some of the instructors would also be there, so there is no need to worry. They will be keeping an eye on you from the distance, they will keep you safe if you are in deep trouble."
"So start mentally preparing for it from now. Each class would be given a specific location to which they would clear up."
-"What? Did I just hear deep trouble?"
-"What is the mission about that we might get in deep trouble?"
-"Specific location? And what are we clearing up?"
Unlike the chattering between the students, I already knew what the mission was all about. In short, the mission the institute would officially assign us was to investigate a case of disappearances in a city at the western side of the Remea continent.
Not surprising, when the students got there in the novel, the disappearances were being enacted by the Dark cult. You could guess what happened after. A sizable number of the students perished there.
The mission was also the reason why the instructor wasn’t in good mood. He thought it was too fast for the students to engage in solving/ investigating a case such as this. He felt that something surely sounded fishy about the mission, and didn’t want his students to take unnecessary risks, but he had to listen to the chancellor.
After the announcement, class continued as usual but instructor Black’s words had caused quite the impact. Chatters and whispers were consistently heard throughout the duration of the surprisingly short class. Apparently, Edmond had something to take care of, so we were somewhat free for the remaining period of the first class.
The moment Edmond left, the class erupted.
"What do you think the mission would be about?" I asked.
"We both just heard there is a mission not so long ago, how we I supposed to know?" Dion pouted.
"Firstly, I was asking you on your opinion, and secondly, it’s an OPINION." I emphasized. "But I wouldn’t expect a braindead to understand.’
"Now that’s just low." Dion huffed.
Dion continued to protest, but my attention wasn’t really on him. Instead it was at the front of the class. Specifically on the main cast or more precisely golden boy himself.
He was chatting amongst the rest with his usual sunny smile. Ignoring both Dion and his useless story, I stood up and walked down towards them.
My lips split into a smile as I reached them. "What’s everyone so chatty about?"
At my words all of them turned towards me; Alistair himself, Rose, Sia, Delilah, Fabian, and the bitch. Now that I think about it the death of the bitch’s mother affected her emotionally and Alistair being Alistair probably used that fragility to become closer to her if you know what I mean. Not that I cared about it.
The first to speak was Anastasia. "Damon, what are you doing here?" She beamed. My first thought was; ’Is she alright?’
I slowly shifted back a bit before I spoke to Alistair. "Did you really have to spread the word that I rejected Instructor Summers’s offer?" I asked, tilting my head.
Aistair smiled. Gods, does he never get tired of flashing his teeth.
"I only said it to a few friends, sorry if it inconvenienced you in any way." he said.
"What’s there to be sorry for? It wasn’t your intention." Elsa chimed in. "You don’t take any offense right, Damon?"
I steadied the rage that instantly boiled inside my being. "No, I don’t, but it doesn’t mean I appreciate it."
"Hmph!" I heard someone scoff. "Who cares if you take offense?"
"This girl won’t change will she?" I sighed looking at the blue haired princess who was glaring at me.
"I’m sure Delilah doesn’t mean it like that." Alistair stepped in.
"Of course she doesn’t." I nodded with a smile.
"I’m curious though, why didn’t you accept the offer?" Sia asked at that point.
"No reason, I just didn’t feel like it."
"It’s good you didn’t, father wouldn’t have been too pleased." Rose suddenly said.
"Why wouldn’t he be pleased?" I asked as a crown crept up my face.
"He’s forbidden is to come under any master or teacher." she replied.
What?! This was news to me. I had never even heard of that.
"Why did he forbid it?" Delilah asked curiously, and everyones ears perked up eager to hear the reason.
"He says; Darkfells bow to no one except their Emperor."
"...."
"..."
How utterly deranged is this man?
