Chapter 317: The Wings [ 2 ]
Chapter 317: The Wings [ 2 ]
I honestly thought she’d be finished swiftly, but to my surprise, she had ordered several more trays of food, to the point I got confused how so much food could even fit in such a small body.
But despite that, we made our way out of the restaurant, and then to some closed-off part of the city. There weren’t any people there, except for a few guards, but with a single hand gesture, Clementine managed to get rid of her.
Afterwards, she glanced at me, as if asking me if I could create a barrier, so that was exactly what I did. A single barrier wasn’t enough to distort the vision of anyone looking from the outside, so I created several hundred. Once nothing was visible, I nodded toward Clementine and Jenna.
"Do you want me to just pull out my wings?" Jenna asked.
I nodded at her again. "Yep. I just want you to show them to Clementine."
She paused for a moment, then decided to try it out. She closed her eyes and focused her energy into her back, determined to get her wings out. Yet for some reason, no matter what she tried, it didn’t work.
It was almost like she could only pull her wings out once she was stressed... Which wasn’t very good when it came to serious situations. We needed those wings, but we didn’t need a liability.
The moment I had that thought, I scrapped it, realizing just how messed up it was. I did only take her because of her wings, but still... she was her own person, and she had a fair bit of trauma to deal with too.
"So you can’t willingly take out your wings? Can you willingly use your human transformation, then?" Clementine asked.
Jenna tilted her head. "I have a human transformation?"
"...Yes?"
An excited look appeared on her face as she went ahead and turned toward me.
"You can turn into a demon, right? How do you turn back into a human?"
"Uh... My only demonic feature is my horns. I’m not actually a demon," I replied.
Realizing that she wasn’t very satisfied with my answer, I decided to elaborate. "Everything demonic about you, just try to push it down. Your horns, push them inward. Your skin, try to select one point in your body and suck it into it. Make it somewhat like a mole, you know?"
I knew that this was far too complex for her to understand, and I really didn’t expect much. Yet to my surprise, her horns suddenly disappeared. A moment later, her skin began to crack slightly and peel off.
Before long, she had turned into a literal human, and as for the cherry on top, her hair and eyes suddenly turned white, representing the Divine Beast lineage.
I just stared at her with a blank expression for a moment, until finally shaking my head.
"I might have to give you my ring. If you walk around with that hair and those eyes, you’ll be captured in no time," I said.
Then, I took off my appearance-altering ring and tossed it toward her. Right as I was about to start explaining how it worked, Clementine pinched my side and said:
"Those white strands of hair aren’t because of appearance altering...? What did you do, Amon?"
I let out a sigh. "I’ll tell you later. Focus on her for now."
And when we finally turned back to her, I was once again surprised to see she had managed to get a hang of the artifact, changing her appearance freely. Her hair was now brown, and her eyes were black, almost like she was taking inspiration from Clementine.
Though, taking inspiration or not, no one could match Clementine’s eyes that looked like black onyx diamonds. It was simply impossible.
"How do I look?" she asked, twirling around. "Do you have a mirror? I wanna see."
Instead of a mirror, Clementine went ahead and just summoned a shield with her Soul Manipulation. It reflected her appearance perfectly, and practically made her eyes sparkle in anticipation.
"Wow... I’m beautiful. Heh... Hehe... I also look like a human now, isn’t that great? Doesn’t that mean I can start befriending humans?"
Clementine and I exchanged a glance, then shrugged.
"I doubt it. We can easily tell you’re a demon, since you have no idea how to hide your Demonic Core."
"Demonic Core...?"
I pointed at her collarbone.
"You have a demonic core on the left side of your collarbone. If someone strikes it and destroys it, you’d turn into dust."
"Ah..."
A fearful expression appeared on her face. That fear spiraled into stress, and before I could even react, her Arch-Angel-like wings blossomed from her back.
But even more surprisingly was the fact that the Demonic Core I had felt in her collarbone vanished, as if being absorbed into her wings. Startled, I tried to inspect her energy, only to find myself being pushed back by her wings.
They seemed dangerous, even for me. Only then did I realize that the wings acted independently, and from Clementine’s wide eyes, she seemed to realize that too.
"What the hell is that?" she mumbled.
"Ah, my wings! They’re out!" Jenna said, flaunting them as she began moving them around. "See? They’re cool, aren’t they? My father never let me show them to anyone."
"Mm..." Clementine narrowed her eyes slightly, then turned to me. She suddenly created a small barrier out of her Soul Weapons to block out sound.
"Did you realize it too?" she asked.
I tilted my head. "I just did. It seems like an independent presence. What do you see?"
"There’s a whole soul in those wings, and it’s much more powerful than her. I’d say that soul is at least Grade 70 or 80 in power... And my guess is, if these two bond together, she could easily reach the level of a Demon Emperor, if not higher."
"Ah..."
A different soul in those wings?
"What do you suggest we do?"
